We are in the midst of a trend where growth in electronic medical records and claims systems — together with advances in computing power — has led to the creation of large data assets that are an important source of information about clinical events and their associated costs and utilization. At the same time this data explosion is occurring, there is great momentum in the area of patient centeredness, with important advancements in the science and technology used for capturing reliable information directly from patients.

However, it is rare for patient-centered data to be represented at scale in the leading big data assets. Are we relying too much on integrated claims and electronic medical record data as the evidence base for answering our questions about health and healthcare?  Will these claims and clinical data sources advance or limit our progress toward a patient-centered approach to delivering care and evaluating outcomes?

This presentation will address the confluence of patient-centeredness and big data, and explore how Optum is meeting the needs of our partners to bring together the voice of the patient with our data-driven solutions.
